PhoneWhispererDownload on the App Store

Privacy

The short version: PhoneWhisperer collects no data. There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics and no advertising. Recordings and notes stay on your iPhone. The one exception is paid and off by default: buy a cloud plan and your recording is sent to our server to be transcribed. Nothing is stored there either — what exactly happens is set out below.

What is stored, and where

Everything below sits on your device and is not transmitted to us.

  • Voice recordings (WAV) — in the app's protected area, until you delete the note they belong to
  • Transcripts, titles, notes, due dates, tags — in the app's local database, until you delete them
  • Settings — in the app's user defaults, until you change them or delete the app
  • Cloud access token — in the device keychain, until the plan ends or you delete the app
  • Downloaded Whisper models — in the app's protected area, until you delete them in Settings

Microphone

The app needs microphone access in order to record. Recording happens only while you have started a recording; the system indicates this throughout. On the Apple Watch the recording continues with your wrist lowered and stops by itself after five minutes at the latest.

PhoneWhisperer Cloud

If you buy a cloud plan and select the cloud as the transcript model, the finished recording is sent to our server over HTTPS and the text comes back. This is the only case in which data reaches us — and it costs money, so it is hard to miss. This is how it is built:

  • The recording never touches a disk. It passes through memory and is gone after the reply.
  • The transcript is stored nowhere. It goes straight back to the iPhone.
  • No content in the log. We record a timestamp, a duration in seconds and a status code — not the text, not the file name, not your IP address.
  • No account. There is no email address, no password, no sign-in. Apple knows who paid; we only know an identifier from Apple and the balance attached to it.
  • Hosted in Switzerland or the EU.

Downloading Whisper models

If you download a Whisper model in Settings, the app fetches it from the public model registry Hugging Face. As with any request to an internet address, your IP address becomes visible to Hugging Face. Nothing is transmitted beyond the request for the model file: no recording, no text, no identifier. If you never download a Whisper model, this request never happens.

Apple Reminders

If you switch on “Save to Reminders”, the app additionally files the title, note, due date and checkbox in Apple's Reminders app. What happens from there — syncing via iCloud, for instance — follows your settings with Apple and Apple's privacy policy. Without that switch the app does not touch Reminders.

Apple's speech recognition and text model

Speech recognition (SpeechAnalyzer/SpeechTranscriber) and the conversion into title, note and category (Apple Intelligence) run on the device. The language models this needs are managed system-wide by iOS; downloading them is the operating system's business, not this app's. Apple's privacy policy applies to them.

Apple Watch

Recordings from the watch go to the paired iPhone through Apple's WatchConnectivity — a link between your two devices, with no service in between. Until the transfer has succeeded the recording sits on the watch; afterwards it is removed there.

What does not exist

  • No user account, no registration, no email address.
  • No analytics, no crash reports to us, no usage statistics.
  • No tracking, no advertising, no advertising identifier, no cookies.
  • No sharing with third parties — there is nothing to share.
  • No location data, no address book, no photos, no contacts.

Deleting

Delete individual notes in the list; the recording that belongs to them goes too. Remove downloaded models under Settings → On this device. Deleting the app deletes everything: recordings, notes, settings and the token in the keychain. Anything already in Apple Reminders stays there — it belongs to the Reminders app and can only be deleted there.

Your rights

Under the Swiss Data Protection Act and the European General Data Protection Regulation you have the right to information, rectification, erasure, restriction and data portability. Since we collect no data, we cannot hand any over or delete any: everything that would be affected sits on your device and in your hands. We are happy to answer questions about it all the same — the address is above.

Children

The app is not directed at children in particular and collects no data, therefore none from children either.

Changes

If something material changes, it will be stated here and in the app's release notes. This page applies in its current version.
